Festive Indoor Picnic

Happy Valentine’s Day EVE!!!

This weekend was super sweet – we got a lot of things done around the house, plus managed to have some Valentine-themed fun. On the chore side of things, we almost completely cleaned out our cluttered office (that room is getting a long overdue makeover), and I cleaned out our closet/ dresser and got rid of a ton of stuff. On the fun side of things, we had a cozy indoor picnic on Saturday afternoon, a festive and delicious breakfast on Sunday, and we had my sister-in-law’s birthday in Leavenworth at one of my fave restaurants.

Now let’s talk about that indoor picnic, shall we? This was something I’ve always wanted to do, because we have an electric fireplace in our living room and I’ve always envisioned a picnic by the fake fire. Sounds magical, doesn’t it? ;)

I love planning little things like this because my mind goes crazy thinking of details. My mind roams through our cupboards and tries to think of unique menu ideas, I imagine festive details such as dishware and paper straws (I have paper straws for almost every occasion), and when it’s time to bring it all together I have so much fun with it.

Here’s what I recommend for a super cozy and successful indoor picnic:

-a cozy setting in your home – whether it be in front of a fireplace, or on the couch
-a fun finger food menu, complete with dessert
-a delicious beverage to go with the feel of the picnic
-a fun candle
-music to play softly in the background
-trays for setting things on (they make set-up and clean-up a breeze)

I was really excited about our menu because it consisted of things I’ve never made before. I had made beer bread the night before to go with dinner because I knew I wanted to try using it for grilled cheese sandwiches. Although they took much longer to cook than regular grilled cheese, they turned out so well! I was really happy with them. (They would be so good with tomato soup on a cold night.) For a side, I wanted something simple like potato chips. We didn’t have any at home, so I cut up a potato and made homemade potato chips! I seasoned them with salt, garlic powder, and Alpine Touch. They were so good! For dessert we had strawberries, licorice and of course – candy hearts (which also gave us a lot of laughs because so many of them are unreadable – “Does this say be my oaf??” “No, that says be my GF.”).

To drink I made a festive pink beverage: cran-raspberry La Croix + pink lemonade with lemon and raspberries to garnish (and of course, heart paper straws). I’m kind of obsessed with La Croix and lemonade. I think it’s going to be my go to drink in the spring and summer.

Oh, I almost forgot – indoor picnics are not complete without super sweet guests to share in the fun. My hubby and these two pups were mine. (Yes, they got some treats too – strawberries!)

Well, time to dive right into a new week. It’s going to be a busy one for us. We’re wrapping up our 14 days of love with tonight and tomorrow – Valentine’s Day, we have a dinner date with my cousin and his girlfriend on Thursday, a family birthday party Saturday night, and we are going snowboarding on Sunday! Whew, plus we have a three day weekend to look forward to. Yay!

XO,
Kayla
